A Natural Facial for Massage Therapists

It is now widely recognised that our skin absorbs many of the ingredients included in cosmetics. On one hand this is good, because it means our skin can be nourished with some wonderful natural ingredients but on the other hand the news is bad, because many skin care products contain harmful chemical ingredients we would never be allowed to take orally, but are still absorbed into the blood stream through our skin. It is estimated that the average woman applies 175 different chemicals to her body in the form of cosmetics every day and will eat two pounds of lipstick in her lifetime! The majority of these products contain a mind-boggling cocktail of industrially produced synthetic chemicals, which can cause a range of conditions from skin allergies to more serious medical conditions.

The word ‘cosmetic’ is derived from the Greek word, ‘cosmos’.  A dictionary definition of ‘cosmos’ is ‘the world or universe as an embodiment of order and harmony, as distinguished from chaos….’ while ‘chaos’ is described as ‘a state of extreme confusion and disorder’.  Ancients cultures such as Greeks and Egyptians (e.g. Cleopatra), considered that to be physically beautiful was to be in harmony with the universe and to be in harmony with the universe was to be in harmony with nature; so they used natural substances on the body to re-enforce the cosmos within.  Nowadays the demand for natural cosmetics is increasing as many of us realise that synthetic substances really can create ‘chaos’ within.
